|
Life expectancy (at birth) of Singaporeans has risen by 15 years since independence. What adjustments are needed to the wish to retire at 60 to enjoy the fruits of one's labour? Retiring early poses problems of adequate finances in old age. Singaporeans want to work longer. What obstacles stand in the way? How can Singaporeans age successfully? Minister Lim Boon Heng who has been looking at the employment and employability of older workers will share his insights at this lunch.

Mr Lim Boon Heng has been a Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office since 1993. Before embarking on his political career, Mr Lim had spent nearly a decade at the Neptune Orient Lines. In 1980, he won his first election as the Member of Parliament for Kebun Baru. From 1989 to 1991, he was the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and was appointed Senior Minister of State (Trade & Industry) in 1991. In 1993, he was appointed Second Minister for Trade and Industry and a Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office. This was followed by the appointment as a Minister without Portfolio, a post which he held until 2001. In 2004, he became Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the People’s Action Party (PAP). Mr Lim also has a distinguished career with the Trade Union in Singapore. In 1981, he joined the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). From 1983 to 1987, he served as the Assistant Secretary-General of NTUC, and was Deputy Secretary-General from 1987 to 1991. In 1993, Mr Lim was successfully elected as NTUC’s Secretary-General and was re-elected for another four terms until he stepped down in 2006.
Mr Lim was also Chairman of the Productivity and Standards Board in 1995, and Chairman of the Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board (SPRING Singapore) from 2002 to 2003.
Mr Lim graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Naval Architecture from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom in 1970. In 1996, the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne also conferred him with an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law. He was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Business by the RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in the same year.
