Synopsis

 

 

The Norwegian Government Pension Fund, currently valued at USD 350 bn, is the largest pension fund in Europe and second largest in the world.  Established in 1990, the Government Pension fund is a continuation of the former Norwegian Petroleum Fund.

 

The purpose of the fund is to invest parts of the large surplus generated by the Norwegian petroleum sector.  The Ministry of Finance is responsible for the management of the Fund and it is administered by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), a part of the Norwegian Central Bank. The capital is invested in 42 developed and emerging equity markets and 31 currencies for fixed income investments. NBIM manages the Fund partly internally and partly by engaging external managers.

Marin Skancke, Director General, Ministry of Finance and Head of the Asset Management Department, will discuss the fund construction and its relationship to macroeconomic policy formulation, governance issues and investment strategy.  

 

The roundtable will also feature a number of key players in Sovereign Wealth Fund field in Singapore


 

 

About the speaker

 

 

Mr Martin Skancke is the Director General and Head of the Asset Management Department at the Ministry of Finance of Norway. He started his career in the Ministry of Finance in 1990 and subsequently became the Deputy Director General in the Ministry of Finance and Head of the Section for Monetary Policy and Public Finances. In 2000, he became the Deputy Head of the Economic Policy Department. Mr Skancke then spent a year in the private sector.as a management consultant with McKinsey and Co. He returned to the public service in 2002 and was Director General and Head of the Domestic Policy Department in the Office of the Prime Minister from 2002 to 2006.

 

Mr Skancke is a Certified Financial Analyst. He has a Business degree from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Adminstration and a MSc Econ, from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
